A multiport medium voltage isolated DC-DC converter

Abstract: Abstract-A multiport medium voltage (MV) isolated DC-DC converter with integrated energy storage, suited for connection of low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) DC grids is presented. A multi-stage structure, adapted for MV ratings, is composed of multiple identical submodules connected in an Input-SeriesOutput-Parallel (ISOP) configuration. Each submodule has three fully bidirectional ports, that are galvanically isolated. This is achieved by means of a three-winding medium frequency transformer, where eac… Show more

“…Other configurations, which can connect multiple single-phase TAB converters, can also be applied to interconnect MVDC and LVDC, as shown in Figure 13 [46][47][48]. It can connect two ports in series and one port in parallel to connect two MVDC grids and one LVDC grid, as shown in Figure 13a.…”

“…From these works, there is an overall agreement that the resonant frequency has to be the same for all the ports, which implies a careful design of the resonant tank and parameters as well as the operation with 50% duty cycle and equal switching frequency for all the active terminals. The suitability for integration of low vottage (LV) storage elements (batteries or ultra-capacitors) is presented in [8]. Clearly, besides the feasibility of the multi-port SRC topologies, a systematic and rigorous mathematical analysis describing the natural power sharing principles is not available in the literature.…”

“…Even if this structure has been developed for AC traction supply, it could be adopted for DC conversion with minor modifications. Lately, the Multiport Energy Gateway (MEG) concept extends the PETT one by including energy storage into the system [12], which is achieved by using a multiport MFT to interface different input power sources at the LLC stage.…”

“…Relevant works considering resonant multiport MFTs in the LLC resonant converter are reported [12]- [17]. According to [13], the resonant frequency has to be the same for all the ports, which implies a carefully design of the resonant tank and its splitting among the multiple ports as well as the operation at a common and fixed switching frequency, which makes frequency, duty-cycle and phase-shift control no more possible.…”
