A multiproxy database of western North American Holocene paleoclimate records

Abstract: Abstract. Holocene climate reconstructions are useful for understanding the diverse features and spatial heterogeneity of past and future climate change. Here we present a database of western North American Holocene paleoclimate records. The database gathers paleoclimate time series from 209 terrestrial and marine sites, including 382 individual proxy records. The records span at least 4000 of the last 12 000 years (median duration = 10 603 years), and have been screened for resolution, chronologic control, an… Show more

“…Proxy type groups following Routson et al. (2021) include pollen ( n = 11), biophysical ( n = 6), and isotopes ( n = 11). “Biophysical” represents a broad proxy type category to group infrequently occurring proxy types for plotting following Kaufman, McKay, Routson, Erb, Davis, et al.…”

“…Holocene records were included in composites that met the screening criteria of the Temperature 12k database (Kaufman, McKay, Routson, Erb, Davis, et al., 2020) or the wNAm Holocene database (Routson et al., 2021). In those studies, records were included with an average sampling resolution of 400 years or better, that span a minimum of 4,000 years within the Holocene, and include age control at a minimum of every 3,000 years, or 5 relatively evenly spaced Holocene age control points.…”

“…Other paleoclimatic data provide additional support for second‐century drought (e.g., Routson et al., 2021; Shuman et al., 2018). A collection of 37 non‐tree‐ring hydroclimate records (e.g., pollen, diatoms, etc.)…”

“…These records span a suite of proxies, from speleothem oxygen isotope records, to inorganic proxies of lake level, to compound‐specific analyses of biomarkers. A key innovation of their approach is the extraction of a summer‐moisture sensitive signal from a series of pollen records from the northern edge of the monsoon domain using the modern analog technique (Marsicek et al., 2018; Overpeck et al., 1985; C. C. Routson et al., 2021; Whitmore et al., 2005; Williams et al., 2018). These data provide new constraints on fluctuations in summer rainfall toward the northern edge of the NAM domain.…”
