A MYB-Domain Protein EFM Mediates Flowering Responses to Environmental Cues in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Plants adjust the timing of the transition to flowering to ensure their reproductive success in changing environments. Temperature and light are major environmental signals that affect flowering time through converging on the transcriptional regulation of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) encoding the florigen in Arabidopsis. Here, we show that a MYB transcription factor EARLY FLOWERING MYB PROTEIN (EFM) plays an important role in directly repressing FT expression in the leaf vasculature. EFM mediates the effect of ambie… Show more

“…An increased abundance of MYB30 in the phloem has been shown to accelerate flowering via its regulation of FT [47]. Another MYB protein (EFM) acts to repress FT transcription in the leaf vasculature [48]. The constitutive expression of CmMYB2 in A. thaliana induces a delay in flowering [49].…”

“…Furthermore, EFM interacts with JMJ30, a H3K36 me2 demethylase that plays a role in the circadian clock. The interaction between EFM and JMJ30 affects the H3K36me2 dynamics of FT, thus EFM may be an important convergence point that mediates plant response to temperature and light to determine the flowering time (Yan et al, 2014).…”
