Topical treatments rely on drugs that play a crucial role in addressing skin and mucous membrane disorders. Therefore, it is highly needed to utilize accurate analytical techniques that can determine the concentration of these chemicals in various sample matrices, including pharmaceuticals, food, and water. Currently, electrochemical sensors are predominantly used in specific fields such as biomedical, industrial, and environmental monitoring, while they have not yet been incorporated into the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. However, electrochemical methods employing an expanding range of sensors provide a reliable, cost-effective, and efficient substitute for classical analytical methods. Their potential is highly favorable, offering possibilities for simultaneous determination, miniaturization, and real-time on-site monitoring. This work covers numerous sensors designed between 2020 and 2023 for the determination of topical drugs, highlighting their respective benefits and drawbacks while illuminating emerging trends. Moreover, it discusses the correlation between the used materials and the ease of manufacturing, to the achieved results, including dynamic range, detection limit, sensitivity, and selectivity. This work aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers in the evolving field of electrochemical sensing by providing guidance and facilitating decision-making, which could lead to significant innovations in sensor technology.

Bimetallic nanocomposites and nanoparticles have received tremendous interest recently because they often exhibit better properties than single-component materials. Improved electron transfer rates and the synergistic interactions between individual metals are two of the most beneficial attributes of these materials. In this review, we focus on bimetallic nanoporous gold (NPG) because of its importance in the field of electrochemical sensing coupled with the ease with which it can be made. NPG is a particularly important scaffold because of its unique properties, including biofouling resistance and ease of modification. In this review, several different methods to synthesize NPG, along with varying modification approaches are described. These include the use of ternary alloys, immersion–reduction (chemical, electrochemical, hybrid), co-electrodeposition–annealing, and under-potential deposition coupled with surface-limited redox replacement of NPG with different metal nanoparticles (e.g., Pt, Cu, Pd, Ni, Co, Fe, etc.). The review also describes the importance of fully characterizing these bimetallic nanocomposites and critically analyzing their structure, surface morphology, surface composition, and application in electrochemical sensing of chemical and biochemical species. The authors attempt to highlight the most recent and advanced techniques for designing non-enzymatic bimetallic electrochemical nanosensors. The review opens up a window for readers to obtain detailed knowledge about the formation and structure of bimetallic electrodes and their applications in electrochemical sensing.

Microfluidic Platform Integrated with Carbon Nanofibers-Decorated Gold Nanoporous Sensing Device for Serum PSA Quantification

Prostate cancer is a disease with a high incidence and mortality rate in men worldwide. Serum prostate-specific antigens (PSA) are the main circulating biomarker for this disease in clinical practices. In this work, we present a portable and reusable microfluidic device for PSA quantification. This device comprises a polymethyl methacrylate microfluidic platform coupled with electrochemical detection. The platinum working microelectrode was positioned in the outflow region of the microchannel and was modified with carbon nanofibers (CNF)-decorated gold nanoporous (GNP) structures by the dynamic hydrogen bubble template method, through the simultaneous electrodeposition of metal precursors in the presence of CNF. CNF/GNP structures exhibit attractive properties, such as a large surface to volume ratio, which increases the antibody’s immobilization capacity and the electroactive area. CNFs/GNP structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, and cyclic voltammetry. Anti-PSA antibodies and HRP were employed for the immune-electrochemical reaction. The detection limit for the device was 5 pg mL−1, with a linear range from 0.01 to 50 ng mL−1. The coefficients of variation within and between assays were lower than 4.40%, and 6.15%, respectively. Additionally, its clinical performance was tested in serum from 30 prostate cancer patients. This novel device was a sensitive, selective, portable, and reusable tool for the serological diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer.
