A narrative review of cortical visual prosthesis systems: the latest progress and significance of nanotechnology for the future

Abstract: Background and Objective: We sought to review the latest developments in cortical visual prosthesis (CVP) systems and the significance of nanotechnology for the future. Over the past century, CVP systems have been researched and developed, resulting in various unique surgical and mechanical techniques.Research findings indicate that partial vision recovery is possible, with improvements in coarse target functions and performance in routine activities. Methods: This review discusses the architecture and physiolo… Show more

“…The success of such a device is contingent on numerous factors, such as the ability of such a device to faithfully convert light information into an electrical impulse and transmit that to the thalamus and subsequently to the visual cortex [228]. The ORION cortical device that is currently being evaluated is a device that bypasses the intermediate stages of the visual pathway and transmits light information directly to the cortex [229].…”

“…In this scenario, the user would simply need to decide on an action and follow the instructions provided by the AI chatbot in a semiautomatic manner. The outputs could be displayed on a technology even more pervasive than smartphones, such as augmented reality lenses (Wiemer & Winoto, 2021) or directly induced through stimulation of the occipital cortex (Kupers et al, 2006; X. Liu et al, 2022).…”
