A natural antisense RNA improves chrysanthemum cold tolerance by regulating the transcription factor DgTCP1

Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are widely involved in the regulation of plant growth and development, but their mechanism of action in response to cold stress in plants remains unclear. Here, we found a lncRNA transcribed from the antisense strand of DgTCP1 (class I TCP transcription factor) of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.), named DglncTCP1. During the response of chrysanthemum to cold stress, overexpression of DgTCP1 improved the cold tolerance of chrysanthemum, while the DgTCP1 editing line… Show more

“…lncRNAs also have roles in heat, cold, drought, osmotic and salt tolerance in wheat ( TalnRNA27 and TalnRNA5 ) (Xin et al, 2011), Chinese cabbage (TCONS_00048391) (Wang et al, 2019), Populus ( PROMTS ) (Song et al, 2019), chrysanthemum ( NAT of DgTCP1 ) (Li et al, 2022b), and Arabidopsis ( BLIL1 , CIL1 , DRIR , and asDOG1 ) (Qin et al, 2017; Yatusevich et al, 2017; Sun et al, 2020c; Liu et al, 2022a). Taken together, the above examples show that lncRNAs may be used as good targets to improve the disease resistance and stress resistance of crop species.…”

“…In chrysanthemum, the expression levels of most CnTCPs were down‐regulated under cold conditions, and CnTCP4 overexpression plants led to hypersensitivity to cold stress (Tian et al ., 2022 ). The expression levels of DgPOD (peroxidase gene from chrysanthemum) were up‐regulated in DgTCP1 overexpression plants after cold stress, indicating that DgTCP1 positively regulates freezing tolerance by reducing the reactive oxygen species accumulation (Li et al ., 2022 ). Interestingly, a cysteine (Cys‐20) site in the TCP‐conserved domain of the AtTCP15 protein is oxidized under oxidative stress and inhibits its transcription, suggesting that TCP is also involved in ROS‐mediated signal transduction (Viola et al ., 2016 ).…”
