A natural interomone 2-methyl-2-butenal stimulates feed intake and weight gain in weaned pigs

Abstract: A novel approach to potentially improve pig growth and welfare is to supplement environments with biologically meaningful odors that are deficient. The post-weaning environment lacks maternal odors that may contribute to the often-observed post-weaning lag in growth and health challenges. A recently reported rabbit maternal pheromone (2-methyl-2-butenal (2M2B)) may act as an interomone in the pig. The objective of this study was to determine if providing a maternal pheromone/interomone during transport and the… Show more

“…Maternal semiochemicals have been shown to improve weaning piglet performance. For instance, the pig appeasing pheromone and the rabbit maternal pheromone (2-methyl-2-butenal) reduced aggression and improved performance when sprayed on the feeders of weaned piglets [30,31]. Thus, it is possible that sow feces contain natural maternal semiochemicals that promote health and performance.…”

“…Change of handlers does not change VSA pattern. To test the repeatability of VSAs and also understand whether different handlers would have different impacts on mouse voiding patterns, such as through interomone (pheromone affecting other species) signaling mechanisms (18,19), a male (~30 yr old) and a female handler (~30 yr old) performed VSA in standard and new rectangular cages. Our data indicated that in both types of cages the handler had no effect on voiding patterns (Tables 6 and 7).…”

“…However, when this product was tried on commercial farms, it had minimal or no efficacy for the weaned pig (we believed the commercial environment was too odorous and thus required a stronger olfactory signal). We then examined the rabbit MP (2-Methyl-2-Butenal, 2M2B) as a potential Interomone and, again, found a reliable reduction in fighting and an increase in feeding ( 59 ) in our controlled university high-health farm. Again, as with PAP when we took 2M2B it to the field, we could not replicate its positive effects with a large number of commercial pigs.…”
