A natural oil increases specific anti-OVA IgG levels and induces a cellular immune response combined with aluminum hydroxide

Abstract: The efficacy of certain vaccines is improved by the use of adjuvants. Nowadays, the development of new, effective, and safe adjuvants that stimulate the innate immune response is researched. In this context, medicinal plants appear as a suitable alternative. Minthostachys verticillata essential oil (EO) has demonstrated the ability to modulate mechanisms of the innate immune response. Thus, the present work aimed to evaluate the EO adjuvant effect on humoral and cellular immunity, coadministered with OVA as an… Show more

“…Different in vitro and in vivo studies carried out by our research group have demonstrated the ability of free M. verticillata EO to stimulate T cells (Cariddi et al 2011;Montironi et al 2019Montironi et al , 2022Campra et al 2021Campra et al , 2022. Here, we showed that the oral supplementation of EO (10 mg/kg/day) or NEO (10 mg/kg/day) increased the percentage of CD4 + T cells.…”

“…Furthermore, our research group has demonstrated the ability of EO to modulate the immune response in experimental mouse models administered intraperitoneally, subcutaneously, intramammary and orally. These discoveries contributed to the knowledge of a biological potential for EO not known until then (Cariddi et al 2006(Cariddi et al , 2007(Cariddi et al , 2011(Cariddi et al , 2013Montironi et al 2019Montironi et al , 2022Campra et al 2021Campra et al , 2022. In a recent study, we have reported the impact of EO oral administration on gastrointestinal and immune health in mice.…”

“…can modulate human neutrophil functions [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Moreover, essential oils and some of their compounds (e.g., monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes) are reported to modulate humoral and cellular immune responses [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ]. Thus, we hypothesized that essential oils from P. balsamifera buds and propolis collected nearby might be a novel source of anti-inflammatory compounds.…”
