A network analysis of interdisciplinary research relationships: the Korean government’s R&D grant program

Abstract: This study examines network topologies of interdisciplinary research relationships in science and technology (S&T) and investigates the relational linkages between the interdisciplinary relations and the quality of research performance. A network analysis was performed to evaluate the General Research Grant (GRG) program, an interdisciplinary research funding program of the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF); the dataset covered the 2002-2004 period. The analytical results reveal the hidden netwo… Show more

“…• The indicator applied here is rooted in social network analysis using the following five measures (Park 2011;Yang et al 2010): in-degree, out-degree, flow betweenness, eigenvector, and pagerank. In-degree refers to the total number of hyperlinks received by others for a single set of components, in this case, 100 university sites.…”

“…This concept, which is known as 'degree centrality', refers to the importance of each individual firm within the network (Yang et al 2010) as well as its potential communicative ability (Freeman 1979). This concept has been applied in many studies within the prior literature, including Tsai (2001) and Larson (2008).…”

“…This potential controlling effect, which is known as 'betweenness centrality', is defined as the frequency of a firm falling between pairs of geodesic citation paths (Freeman 1979), and indicates the ability to control and coordinate knowledge within the overall diffusion process (Yang et al 2010). In the absence of nodes with significant levels of betweenness, the network might well fall apart.…”

“…Past literature has shown a recent trend toward defining inter-disciplinarity in a quantitative way (Bourke and Butler 1998;Kaur et al, 2012;Pan et al, 2012;Schoolman et al, 2012;Tijssen, 1992;Xie et al, 2015;Yang and Heo 2014;Yang, Park and Heo, 2010). Bibliometrics is a useful tool for identifying publication trends, authors' academic fields, and authors' coworkers.…”
