A new 19-metal-atom cluster [(Me2PhP)10Au12Ag7(NO3)9] with a nearly staggered–staggered M5 ring configuration

Abstract: New mixed metal clusters with M19 metal frameworks have been synthesized by NaBH4 reduction of Au(NO3)(PMe2Ph) together with AgNO3 in ethanol. Single crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed Au12Ag7 and Au17Ag2 metal skeletons for these clusters, which are best described in terms of bicapped pentagonal antiprismatic cages with a staggered-staggered M(5) ring configuration. These clusters connect the missing link between M13 icosahedral and M25 biicosahedral clusters providing a view of the cluster growth process… Show more

“…[45,46] It is worth noting that, between M 13 and M 25 9 ] have been reported, which show an interpenetrated biicosahedral structure. [47] Interestingly, the [Au 39 A C H T U N G T R E N N U N G (PPh 3 ) 14 Cl 6 ]Cl 2 nanocluster does not follow the icosahedral motif, [46] instead, it shows a multiple layered structure (1:9:9:1:9:9:1), resembling bulk Au. The wellknown [Au 55 A C H T U N G T R E N N U N G (PPh 3 ) 12 Cl 6 ] cluster is suggested to have a twoshell icosahedra structure, that is, the Au 13 icosahedral core surrounded by a second full shell of 42 gold atoms (i.e., twoshell Mackay icosahedron), but the crystal structure has not been attained to date.…”

“…Nevertheless, the minimal (2 II, 1 DI) interpenetrating 19-atom unit is known for two nitrate/phosphine-ligated Au-Ag clusters, Au 12 Ag 7 (PMe 2 Ph) 10 (NO 3 ) 9 and Au 17 Ag 2 (PMe 2 Ph) 10 (NO 3 ) 9 (Nunokawa et al 2005).…”

“…Phenyl groups in PPh 3 are omitted for clarity. ticles observed thus far by this method [2,4,[10][11][12]; the size of the smallest cluster particles made thus far by TEM image measurements is approximately 1.0 nm [2,4,12]. Cluster 1 should be stabilized by anchoring to the substrate surface via a pyridine N atom and prevented from agglomeration under the conditions of the TEM observation.…”

“…From the perspective of nanoparticle synthesis, we have begun a systematic exploration of the modification of Au(I) molecules by SR ligand(s). Here, we report the first synthesis of an SR-modified Au 11 molecular cluster, Au 11 (S-4-NC 5 -H 4 ) 3 (PPh 3 ) 7 (1), in a preparative scale as well as single crystal and TEM structural elucidation, which should serve as a structural model for such sub-nanometer sized gold particles with SR ligands; the TEM image of this cluster is the smallest one ever observed [4]. In addition, this paper provides a new vista for Au 11 molecular clusters reported thus far with the general formula Au 11 (PR 3 ) 7 X 3 (X = halogen, SCN, CN) [5], by virtue of the potential use of this cluster as a building block for constructing larger Au molecular clusters [6],as our Au 11 cluster has three dangling Spy ligands.…”
