A New AC/AC Multilevel Converter Family

Abstract: A new ac/ac modular multilevel converter (M 2 LC) family will be introduced. The new concept stands out due to its modularity and superior control characteristics. The stringent modularity results in a very cost-efficient and versatile converter construction. This new M 2 LC concept is well suited to a wide range of multiphase ac/ac converters. The basic working principle together with the static and dynamic behavior are explained in detail on a single-phase ac/ac converter enabling four-quadrant operation. It i… Show more

“…This topology, developed by R. Marquardt [35][36], is basically composed of half-bridge two-level modules (Fig. 11) or full-bridge three-level (H-bridge) modules [37][38], which contain low voltage capacitors -a major advantage of this solution. Each phase leg includes modules divided into two equal parts and inductors protecting short circuits.…”

“…The multilevel families have certain advantages in the high voltage and high power range. In particular, the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) [6], [7], [8] has been identified as a potential choice for two main reasons; • Each converter module is a low voltage assembly made of standard industrial components which will allow many suppliers to be involved in the construction and operation. This aspect is particularly interesting for CERN.…”

“…Notably, for a more comprehensive discussion on CSCs in wind applications, the readers may be refer to recent works [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Similarly, a detailed discussion on the operational features of VSCs in wind generation applications may be found in [8,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28], while a description and operational features of the BoBC/MMLCs may be found in [13,[29][30][31][32][33][34][35].…”
