A New Allogromiid Genus (Rhizopoda: Foraminiferida) from the Vellar Estuary, Bay of Bengal

Abstract: Abstract. This paper reports what we believe to be the first record of allogromiid foraminifers from coastal Indian waters. Two species from the Vellar Estuary on the east coast of India south of Madras are described and placed in a new genus Vellaria. The foraminifers live at or near the sediment-water interface and are characterised by the development of a flared, conical or trumpet-shaped apertural structure which apparently serves to attach the test to small sand grains. Allogromiids are delicate and incon… Show more

“…Molecular and cell biological analyses independently indicate that the foraminifer we illustrate here is an allogromiid. The morphology of the SBB allogromiid is similar to two other Clade L allogromiids ( Ovammina opaca [ Dahlgren , 1962, 1967]; Cribrothalammina alba [e.g., Goldstein and Barker , 1990]) and also the allogromiid Vellaria [ Gooday and Fernando , 1992]. The SBB allogromiid is longer and more slender, has a thinner test wall, and has better developed cytoplasmic vacuoles than does O. opaca .…”

“…The new species differs from Vellaria pellucidus and V. sacculus Gooday and Fernando 1992 in having a more lenticular shape and a less well-developed apertural structure. The test is less elongate than that of V. zucchellii Sabbatini et al 2004.…”

“…Most investigations are based on dried residues and therefore biased towards the calcareous and more robust agglutinated taxa, which survive desiccation. A number of soft-bodied monothalamous foraminifera have been already described (for example, Nyholm, 1974 and earlier papers;Goldstein and Barker, 1988;Gooday, 1990;Bernhard and Bowser, 1992;Gooday and Fernando, 1992) but these delicate taxa are not normally considered as part of the foraminiferal community. Soft-bodied monothalamous foraminifera are reported from marine habitats ranging from supralittoral sands and intertidal mudflats to deep-sea trenches.…”
