A new approach for cell formation and scheduling with assembly operations and product structure

Abstract: In this paper, a new formulation model for cellular manufacturing system (CMS) design problem is proposed. The proposed model of this paper considers assembly operations and product structure so that it includes the scheduling problem with the formation of manufacturing cells, simultaneously. Since the proposed model is nonlinear, a linearization method is applied to gain optimal solution when the model is solved using direct implementation of mixed integer programming. A new genetic algorithm (GA) is also pro… Show more

“…Wang and Tang [25] developed a scatter search algorithm combined with dispatching rules to solve the joint decision problem of CF and parts scheduling for a cellular manufacturing system where there can be several units of each type of machine and the parts must be processed and transferred in batches. Aryanezhad et al [26] paid attention to CF while considering the assembly operation and product structure by using a genetic algorithm. Mak et al [27] combined discrete particle swarm optimization and constraint programming to integrate the multi-periods production scheduling with the CF in a virtual manufacturing system as a means to achieve the minimum total manufacturing costs over the planning horizon.…”

“…The second issue is whether the formal control procedures such as MRP can be used for scheduling Cellular Systems. The production planning and control system does not necessarily be designed to operate on grouping principles, as a cell is an application of Group Technology (GT) [2].In most of the cases planning procedures depends on the type of cells involved, the operating pattern, the type of flow pattern in the cells, the linkages between cells, the cell sizes, the number and sizes of the part families assigned to the cells, the relative setup times, the degree of automation, etc. …”
