A new approach for power quality improvement of DFIG based wind farms connected to weak utility grid

Abstract: Most of power quality problems for grid connected doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) with wind turbine include flicker, variations of voltage RMS profile, and injected harmonics due to switching in DFIG converters. Flicker phenomenon is the most important problem in wind power systems. This paper described an effective method for mitigating flicker emission and power quality improvement for a fairly weak grid connected to a wind farm with DFIGs. The method was applied in the rotor side converter (RSC) of … Show more

“…That the speed varies with power is the desired feature for use as wind turbine generator. A variation in shaft speed above 30% has been observed in the test, which is similar to the published results in the literature (Benelghali et al, 2012; Mahvash et al, 2017). The load test had constraints of prime mover capacity and current rating of winding; otherwise, further increase in APW frequency could yield yet higher speed for the generator.…”

“…In this section, simulation results are obtained beneath various operating conditions to evaluate performances of designed FOPI controller, and to validate the advantages of proposed controller in comparison with the IOPI controller for the studied wind energy generation system based on a 1.5 MW DFIG prototype. In this work, the IOPI controllers used in the control loops of rotor side static converter are formulated by pole-cancelation method as applied in [46]. The complete WGS based on DFIG-generator was simulated by MATLAB/Simulink.…”
