A New Approach of Minimizing Commutation Torque Ripple for BLDCM

Abstract: Abstract:The properties of brushless DC motor (BLDCM) are similar to the fractional, slot-concentrated winding of permanent-magnet synchronous machines, and they fit well for electric vehicle application. However, BLDCM still suffers from the high commutation torque ripple in the case of the traditional square-wave current control (SWC) method, where the current vector rotates asynchronously with back-EMF. A current optimizing control (COC) method for BLDCM is proposed in the paper to minimize the commutation … Show more

“…Based on (12), the torque waveform during the commutation process is shown in Figure 4. It can be seen that the torque change is zero only when t = 3Li a /E, and a large torque ripple occurs at the end of commutation process, namely the moment i a just reduces to zero.…”

“…If the commutation torque ripple is not suppressed by specific reduction strategy, the vibration and noise of motors will increase, and the promotion application of BLDCM will be restricted in a field that has strict requirements for torque ripple and noise [9][10][11]. When the BLDCM operates in its high-speed range, limited by the output voltage of the inverter, the incoming phase and the outgoing phase current are difficult to change rapidly, so the motor will generate greater commutation torque ripple in this region [12][13][14].…”

“…Good performance has been achieved compared with a conventional converter. In addition, the ripples in torque during the commutation period have been improved in [12] by optimizing the currentloop controller of a PMSM-drive system. It was illustrated in [13] that the optimizing of the reluctance torque to a minimum value is not adequate to get low ripples in torque.…”
