A new approach to practical acute toxicity testing

Abstract: A method for the investigation of the acute toxicity of an unknown chemical substance, with an estimation on the LD50, is described. Using this, it is possible to obtain with 13 experimental animals adequate information on the acute toxicity and on the LD50. This method has no limitations and applies to drugs, agricultural and industrial chemicals. It can be used for every route of administration.

“…The method of Lorke [8] was employed in this study. Twenty five mice of both sexes were randomly grouped into five with five mice in each group and were fed orally with graded doses (100, 500, 1 000, 1 500 and 2 000 mg/kg of MERS by gastric gavage.…”

“…The acute toxicity test for ethanolic leaf extract of T. trilobatum was carried out to evaluate any possible toxicity using the method of Lorke, 1983 [16] . Different doses of extract were injected intraperitonealy into groups of 20 mice.…”

“…LD50 is the dose of any substance tested required to kill half the number (50%) of test animals (Lorke, 1983). LD50 test includes feeding the substance by mouth, injecting it into veins, muscle tissue or the body cavity and applying it to the skin.…”
