A new business model for sustainable development: an exploratory study using the theory of constraints in Nordic organizations

Abstract: The business model in use by many large companies has changed significantly from that of a decade ago and has incorporated environmental and social aspects of performance. However, given these achievements, are there unavoidable inhibitions in the contemporary business model that mean that even exemplar corporations cannot become sustainable?A key issue is consumption without limits, but can businesses do anything about this? The UK Government's Sustainable Development Commission identifies this as an issue. T… Show more

“…Some authors explicitly recognise the role of national context for the emergence of new business models (Birkin et al, 2009;Budde Christensen et al, 2012) or even that characteristic business models emerge in response to the opportunities and gaps present in the institutional environment (Casper and Kettler, 2001). Particularly, politico-institutional and socio-institutional dynamics (Provance et al, 2011) such as changes in the law and changing consumer preferences (Linder and Cantrell, 2000) affect a firm's external business environment.…”

“…The proposition being put forward is that economic and social benefits can be achieved as a corollary of meeting environmental-related sustainability criteria. The experience in Bahrain suggests a different relationship may exist in developing countries in terms of the three elements of the TBL: environmental, economic and social [4,39]. Unlike in developed Western countries, here the main drivers seem to be economic and social, with environmental benefits being a corollary to the other two.…”

“…In the case of BMI [5,[23][24][25], which sees the coexistence of breeding and tourism, value capture [5] would seem to be able to guarantee a more durable survival to farms, increasing the flow of revenues by diversifying them.…”

“…Consequently, this topic is attracting a growing attention [22] and there is a general call for rethinking BM trying to make the sustainability an objective. However, even though there is an increasingly richer theoretical body that consider sustainability and BMI as complementary [5,[23][24][25], the relationship between sustainable BM and innovation has to be thoroughly analyzed. In particular, the introduction of the issue of sustainability in a traditional BM can be considered as a kind of innovation in the BM itself [5] and the more proactive is the innovation (it usually implies the reengineering of the core processes of the firm toward a sustainable mission), the more effective will be the strategy for obtaining sustainability.…”
