A new candidate of smart drug synthesis via silver (I)-NHC complexes

Abstract

In this work, firstly, water-soluble carbene compounds were firstly synthesized in literature. Secondly, new N-heterocyclic metal complexes were obtained from silver (I) metal and functional carbene compounds. The aims of these syntheses are to use them in pharmacology as cancer drugs and the catalysis of organic reactions.The main skeleton of the 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (Fig1, compound 1) molecule combined with functional bromide groups (compounds 2a-c) to form heterocyclic carbenes with symmetrical properties (compounds 3a-c). The NHC precursor compounds reacted with Ag2O to form Ag(I)-NHC complexes (Fig 2, compounds 4a-c). Ag(I)-NHC complexes were characterized by different techniques, such as melting point analysis, conductivity, 1 H and 13 C-NMR, LC-MS, FTIR, TGA, XRD, and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The antimicrobial and antibacterial activities of Ag(I)-NHC complexes were investigated against gram-negative, gram-positive bacteria, and fungi using the disc diffusion method. All tested complexes showed antimicrobial activity with different specifications.
