A new caruncle-bearing fanged frog (Limnonectes, Dicroglossidae) from Laos and Thailand

Abstract: A new species of the dicroglossid frog genus Limnonectes is described from recent and historical museum specimens collected in central and southern Laos and northeastern Thailand. Limnonectessavansp. nov. has males that bear a caruncle on top of the head, and most closely resembles L.dabanus from adjacent southern Vietnam and eastern Cambodia. However, the new species is readily distinguished from L.dabanus, and all other caruncle-bearing species of Limnonectes in mainland Southeast Asia, by its adult and larv… Show more

“…In peninsular Thailand, the biota is predominantly Sundaic species, with an affinity to Malaysia and the more westerly islands of Indonesia (Hughes et al 2003). Recorded amphibians in Thailand include approximately 175 species (Duengkae et al 2016;Phusaensri et al 2018;Thongproh et al 2018;Frost 2019;Phimmachak et al 2019) from three orders, Anura, Caudata, and Gymnophiona. Amphibian inventory efforts have been continuous in Thailand, but focused mainly on the discovery of new taxa (e.g., Phusaensri et al 2018;Sheridan and Stuart 2018;Phimmachak et al 2019).…”

“…Homologous sequences of all major clades of Limnonectes and the outgroups Fejervarya limnocharis and Quasipaa spinosa (based on [ 16 , 17 , 24 , 25 ]) were downloaded from GenBank ( Table S1 ) and aligned to the newly-generated sequences of Limnonectes sp. and L. doriae using the MUSCLE plug-in as implemented in Geneious R11.…”

“…We used call structure description and the terminology of pulses, notes, and calls as defined by Köhler et al [ 50 ] and Emmrich et al [ 51 ]. Comparative advertisement call characters for L. dabanus , L. lauhachindai, and L. savan were taken from the literature [ 7 , 8 , 17 ].…”
