A new Caryospora coccidian species (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae)

Abstract: It is posted here for your personal use. No further distribution is permitted. A new Caryospora coccidian species is described from the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). Further molecular characterisation was conducted at two loci; the 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA). 52At the 18S locus, the new species of Caryospora was most closely related to Besnoitia besnoiti (99.2% sim-53 ilarity) and Hammondia triffittae (98.8% similarity). Although, no 28S partial sequences from Caryospora 54 were available… Show more

“…minima’s position and subsequent polyphyly of Schellackia . Another Caryospora sequence included in the analysis (KJ634019.1– Kookaburra)[ 37 ] has been placed with the cyst forming coccidians. Hence, the so-named Caryospora species considered here cluster with multiple families of coccidia.…”

“…Pairwise comparisons for similarity were performed by the program WATER included in European Molecular Biology Open Software Suite (EMBOSS, The European Bioinformatics Institute, Cambridgeshire, UK) ( Rice et al., 2000 ). The phylogenetic analysis was performed by construction of a multiple alignment, removal of gapped columns, and analysis by the maximum likelihood method ( Yang et al., 2014 ) conducted using MEGA 5.2 ( Tamura et al., 2011 ).…”

“…At least 25 species of Caryospora have been identified from birds worldwide ( Yang et al., 2014 ). Of the species identified in birds, 15 have been identified in raptors: 7 from Europe, 2 from Saudi Arabia, 1 from Russia, and 5 from USA ( Upton et al., 1990; Alfaleh et al., 2013; McAllister et al., 2013 ).…”
