A New Class of Two-Channel Biorthogonal Filter Banks and Wavelet Bases.

Abstract: Abstract-We propose a novel framework for a new class of two-channel biorthogonal filter banks. The framework covers two useful subclasses: i) causal stable IIR filter banks ii) linear phase FIR filter banks. There exists a very effcient structurally perfect reconstruction implementation for such a class. Filter banks of high frequency selectivity can be achieved by using the proposed framework with low complexity. The properties of such a class are discussed in detail. The design of the analysis/synthesis sys… Show more

“…The filters chosen for the two stages of decomposition are 9/7 filter and PKVA filters. The 9/7 filter is a bi-orthogonal filter and PKVA filter is coined from the first names of the four authors who proposed it, Phoong, Kim, Vaidyanathan, and Ansari [7] . It is of quincunx/fan filter type.…”

“…The band pass outputs at various levels of Laplacian pyramids are analyzed using Directional Filter Banks (DFB) for extracting the angular information [5]. But due to redundancy nature of Laplacian pyramidal representation of images, the use of contourlet transform has not become popular for image compression algorithms [6][7].…”

“…Such a filterbank has been extensively studied [7,8,3], and is known as Quincunx Filterbank (QFB). The QFB is a non-separable perfect reconstruction filterbank defined by two diamond-shaped half-band filters, H 0 (z) and H 1 (z), preceded by a parallelogram resampler R and followed by a quincunx resampler Q [9], as illustrated in Fig.…”

“…The analysis filter is zero-phase with 7×13 coefficients and the synthesis with 9×17, also zero-phase. As a comparison, we use the quincunx/fan filters of [9] (PKVA), where the analysis filter has 23×23 taps and the synthesis 46×46. For this synthetic image, a significant improvement is observed.…”
