This paper proposed and validated a self-powered vibration control and monitoring (SVCM) system which consists of a pendulum-type tuned mass damper (TMD), a rotary electromagnetic (EM) device, an energy harvesting circuit (EHC) and a wireless smart sensor (WSS). As the key element in the system, the regenerative electromagnetic TMD (EMTMD) is able to convert vibration energy of structures to electrical energy, and thus plays dual functions, namely, vibration mitigation and energy harvesting. With the aid of EHC, the electrical energy can be further stored and used to power WSS that closely monitor structural vibration responses. The feasibility of the proposed SVCM system was validated via shaking table tests, in which a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structural model equipped with the SVCM system was tested under random excitations. The functionality of the SVCM system was discussed with regard to the vibration control, energy harvesting and vibration monitoring performance. The experimental results revealed that the proposed regenerative EMTMD device can provide regenerative and economical power to WSS. The harvested power reaches about 312.4 mW under random ground motions with root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration equal to 0.05g. Meanwhile, the comparison shows that the peak magnitude of the frequency response function of structural displacement is reduced by 10 dB with the aid of the EMTMD. This study demonstrates that the SVCM system provides a novel and promising solution to the power supply problem associated with wireless sensing technology, and will stimulate the integration of vibration control and monitoring system.

In this study, two single-stage AC -DC converters for low-voltage electromagnetic energy harvesting are presented. The converters are designed to boost very low AC voltage (hundreds of millivolts) to a high DC voltage (3.3 V DC). The successful operation of such systems depends on proper development of control and driver circuits. The converters also need to be designed in proper accordance with the associated microgenerator. Detailed discussion on the design and selection of critical components of the converter is also presented. Low-power driver circuits are used to enable a self-sustaining system. Unlike DC -DC converters, direct AC -DC converters generally do not have a common ground. Such a structure makes implementation of feedback and control difficult. A novel indirect feedback strategy is proposed to solve this problem. The idea is to obtain the output voltage information referenced to the system ground. The feedback circuit is very simple to implement and consumes very low power. An auxiliary supply has also been designed to provide power to the gate drivers. It is shown that the indirect feedback strategy also works for load variations. Both simulation and experimental results with a suitable microgenerator are presented to verify the self-sustainable efficient operation of the harvesting systems.

This paper presents an equivalent model of an inductive magnetic harvester, taking nonlinear effects of magnetic field into consideration. Conventional models consist of one AC voltage source in series with an inductor and are unable to predict harvester performance precisely; a more accurate approach is introduced by considering the nonlinear effects of the magnetic fields. The new model uses a magnetizing inductance and a leakage inductance rather than a single series inductor. In the proposed equivalent model, magnetizing and leakage inductance can be found by detecting flux variation in the air gap between magnets and coil cores. The finite element analysis (FEA) method is used to estimate the electromagnetic field and flux linkage of the coils. The optimum harvesting system design is only possible based on the more accurate modeling of the inductive magnetic harvester.
