A new Endoclita (C. &. R. Felder, 1874) from the High Mountains of Taiwan with notes about its evolutionary origins (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae)

Abstract: A new species Endoclita atayala Buchsbaum & Hsu sp. n. is based on a single female specimen collected at light in the high mountains of northern Taiwan. Comparisons with all other Endoclita (C. & R. Felder, 1874) species confirms that E. atayala sp. n. exhibits distinctive and unique wing pattern characteristics and probably has a sister group relationship with E. crenilimbata (Le Cerf, 1919) of southeastern China and illustrated here for the first time, and E. nodus (Chu & Wang, 1985) of northeast… Show more

“…Several studies have documented rapid population outbreaks of some insect pest species in Vietnam such as Batocera lineolata (Chevrolat, 1852) in Eucalyptus hybrid plantations (Thu et al 2021;Quang et al 2022a), Neurozerra conferta (Walker, 1856) in Melaleuca plantations (Chi et al 2022b), andBacchisa medioviolacea (Breuning, 1965) in Docynia indica plantations (Quang et al 2022b). In 2022, a new species, Endoclita vietnamensis (Buchsbaum & Grehan, 2022) has been recorded as a serious pest in Eucalyptus and Acacia plantations, the damaged plantations were very close to natural forests (Buchsbaum et al 2022).…”

“…Some longhorn beetles, such as Batocera lineolata on Eucalyptus hybrid (Thu et al 2021;Quang et al 2022a), Xystrocera festiva on A. mangium (Thu et al 2021) and Bacchisa medioviolacea Breuning, 1965 on Docynia indica (Quang et al 2022b), have been recorded to appear and break out into pest epidemics on some forestry plant species in Vietnam. Moreover, several new species have been recorded in Vietnam in plantations very close to natural forests (Buchsbaum et al 2022). The cause of their sudden appearance and very rapid population outbreaks may be due to climate change and the shrinking of the area of their preferred host tree species, possibly the decline that comes from natural forests.…”

“…The pattern conforms to vicariance followed by range expansion between P. karna and P. 'paris 3'. The original differentiation between the mainland P. paris and P. hermosanus of Taiwan may have been influenced by seafloor extension in the Taiwan Strait, as has been suggested for ghost moths (Hepialidae) endemic in the region (Buchsbaum et al 2018).…”
