A New Hourglass-Shaped Co(II)₁₅ Cluster Constructed From [1, 1′-Biphenyl]-2,2′-dicarboxylic Acid: Syntheses, Structures and Magnetic Properties

Abstract

A new Co(II)15 cluster, [Co15(L)9(OH)12(EtOH)8(H2O)4] (1) (H2L= [1, 1′‐biphenyl]‐2,2′‐dicarboxylic acid), has been synthesized from the reaction of H2L and Co(NO3)2.6H2O under solvothermal condition and characterized by X‐ray single crystal diffraction, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, Powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental analysis. The results show that the coordination chemistry of the multi‐dentate ligand H2L on Co(II) ion with the exist of μ3‐bridging mode of hydroxyl groups and the μ2‐carboxyl oxygen atom in the complex 1. The magnetic investigations of complex 1 has shown antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt centers, which indicate that complex 1 may be a good candidate for magnetic material.
