A New Isoflavone from Genista corsica

Abstract: A new isoflavone (1), dihydroisoderrondiol [(3' 'S,4' 'R)-5,7,3' ', 4' '-tetrahydroxy-2' ',2' '-dimethyl-3' ',4' '-dihydropyrano(5' ',6' ';3' ',4' ')isoflavone], was isolated from aerial parts of Genista corsica, together with 11 previously known compounds [daidzein, isoprunetin, isoderrone (2), ficuisoflavone (3), luteolin, luteolin 4'-O-beta-glucoside, luteolin 7-O-beta-glucoside, taxifolin, 5-methoxytaxifolin, sucrose, and D-pinitol]. The structure of 1 was elucidated by spectroscopic methods.

“…Pinitol (4) was also isolated in some Pinaceae and in 27 species of Leguminosae, some of these species belonging to the Genista genus (Plouvier, 1962). Compound 4 was also isolated in two endemic Sardinian species of this genus: G. corsica (Pistelli et al, 2000) and G. ephedroides (Giachi et al, 2002). Moreover, this compound is considered a chemotaxonomic marker of the Leguminosae family.…”

“…In addition, cytochrome P450s involved in fl avonoid metabolism have been described to exhibit stereoselectivity. 333,342 Racemic taxifolin and its glycosides have been previously studied for their potent antioxidant properties. 325,335,346,349,370,372 Taxifolin is a very common antioxidant additive in the food industry 212 and has also been described to have antiinfl ammatory and analgesic properties, 325 hepatoprotective capacity, 373 free radical scavenger activity, 212,335,349,374 and also demonstrates a protective role in plants against pathogens.…”
