A new land‐cover map of Africa for the year 2000

Abstract: Aim In the framework of the Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC 2000), a land-cover map of Africa has been produced at a spatial resolution of 1 km using data from four sensors on-board four different Earth observing satellites.Location The map documents the location and distribution of major vegetation types and non-vegetated land surface formations for the entire African continent plus Madagascar and the other surrounding islands. Methods The bulk of these data were acquired on a daily basis throughout the year 2000 … Show more

“…6815 0 N, 980 0 E; figure 1). This is a large area classified as closed evergreen lowland forest according to the Global Land Cover 2000-map of Africa [37] with several protected areas [36]. Not all the area outside reserves that is classified as closed forest by the land cover map is structurally intact forest, but intact forests still extend far outside the protected areas (E. O. Effiom and O. Olsson 2009-2012, personal observations).…”

“…The strongest deviations in pCO 2 between data from this study and the modelled data from 3 were observed for the rivers (Zambezi and Congo) with extensive wetland coverage (5 and 10% of the total catchment, respectively). ) and %O 2 (%), and aboveground woody biomass (Mg km -2 ) 57 , % of dense forest cover (%) 56 , and wetland surface (cumulated surface and fraction of catchment) 58 . The strong increase in cumulated wetland surface between 200 and 700 km upstream of Kinshasa corresponds to the core of the "Cuvette Centrale".…”

“…The spatial distribution of vegetation types for the Volta watershed was based primarily on the 1 km 2 -resolution global land cover (GLC2000) map for Africa, derived from daily measurements collected during the year 2000 by the Vegetation sensor on-board the Spot-4 satellite (Mayaux et al, 2004). Through a combination of remote-sensing data and expert knowledge, Mayaux et al (2004) classify the entire continent of Africa into 27 land-cover categories.…”

“…Through a combination of remote-sensing data and expert knowledge, Mayaux et al (2004) classify the entire continent of Africa into 27 land-cover categories. Four GLC2000 landcover classes constitute greater than 95% of the total vegetation in the Volta watershed although the proportions vary between sub-basins (Fig.…”
