A new, large calibre, self‐expanding and self‐retaining temporary intraprostatic stent (ProstaCoil) in the treatment of prostatic obstruction

Abstract: Because of its large diameter and its temporary nature this new stent allows endoscopic examination of the bladder and has few side effects. This stent should be considered as an alternative to a urethral catheter or other temporary stents in patients who are unfit for surgery.

“…Patients temporarily or permanently unfit for sur gery need an indwelling catheter for long periods or per manently. Although urethral catheterization is the sim plest form of diversion in urinary retention as a long-or short-term palliative treatment, long-term indwelling catheters are documented as the main cause of ascending urinary infections and related complications [3][4][5][6], Since Fabian [1,8] reported on his development of a 'partial catheter', we have become aware of the benefits of intra prostatic stents. Ten years after this development the tem porary intraprostatic coil stents have become a satisfacto ry alternative for the treatment of urinary retention caused by prostatic obstruction, in many countries espe cially in Europe and the Middle East.…”

“…As these stents are for temporary use, they need to be easily removed or replaced, with biodegradable stents being an exception [16]. Examples of temporary stents include the Urospiral, Prostakath, ProstaCoil, Memokath, Biofix, Intraurethral Catheter, Barnes stent and Trestle [17,18,19,20]. …”
