A new machine strategy for sculptured surfaces using offset surface

Abstract: A new CNC tool path planning method is developed for accurate and efficient finishing cutting of sculptured surfaces. The proposed method generates CNC tool paths based on an offset surface of an object instead of the actual surface. The new algorithm consists of two main computationaltechniques:offset surface generation techniqueand offsetCNC tool path planning technique. In offset surfacegeneration. approximate parametric offset surfaces are generated accurately from an original parametric surface by employin… Show more

“…These offset surfaces have already been used to compute tool path, especially with ball end mills [18,19] but also with flat and filleted end mills [20]. We focused on the definition of the MS in 5-axis end milling.…”

“…In 3-axis milling, we are able to drive the tool centre location point C L and to find the resulting tool contact point C C like in the offset [18] and APT approaches. However, this approach has not been applied in 5-axis milling due to its complexity [21].…”

“…The tool path generation using offset surfaces has already been the object of numerous papers [8] [9]. Among the problems encountered in the tool path generation using offset surfaces, the most constraining are the problems of loops or self intersections and of precision [10] [11].…”
