“…Samples were processed as previously described ( Kimura et al., 2007 ), with the exception that 4% paraformaldehyde and 2 mmol/L CaCl 2 were used in the primary fixative and 2% OsO 4 in the secondary fixative. Images were acquired using the Orius CDD SC1000 camera (Gatan, Oxon, UK).…”

“…On the other hand, we do not exclude a possibility that membrane-anchored cyt c 4 works in growing cells. Our previous study on the marine purple non-sulfur bacterium R. sulfidophilum showed that the membrane-bound cyt c 2m is converted into the soluble form, cyt c 549 , by an unknown proteolytic reaction when the cell was aged . If similar conversion occurs on R. gelatinosus cyt c 4 , the rate of electron transfer to the RC may be changed according to the cell growth conditions.…”

“…Some species among the R-subclass have membrane-bound cytochromes c, which show high sequence similarities to cytochrome c 2 but possess a hydrophobic anchor stretch at the N-terminal region. These cytochromes, referred to as cytochrome c y or c 2m , act as efficient electron donors to the RC in addition to the water-soluble cytochrome c 2 in Rhodobacter capsulatus (2) and Rhodovulum sulfidophilum (3).…”
