A NEW METHOD FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF MODE II FATIGUE THRESHOLD STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR RANGE ΔKτth

Abstract: In order to evaluate the threshold value AKZth for mode I1 fatigue crack growth, a new measurement method of mode I1 fatigue crack growth has been developed. This method uses a conventional closed-loop tension-compression fatigue testing machine without additional loading attachments. Mode I1 fatigue tests for structural steel and rail steel have been carried out. This method has proved successful and has reproduced mode I1 fatigue fracture surfaces similar to those found in the spalling of industrial steel-ma… Show more

“…This is qualitatively consistent with observations made by Murakami and Hamada 16 who performed mode II propagation tests on a rail steel. They observed much rtial local branching’ on the fracture surfaces, inclined approximately 70° to the main crack (so that the mode I stress intensity factor undergone by these aborted branches when they are left behind the main crack tip is probably smaller than that calculated above for a transverse branch, but large similarities between both cases are believed to exist anyway).…”

“…The Mode II fatigue crack growth tests were conducted by using the specially designed double cantilever (DC) type specimen designed by Murakami and Hamada [6][7][8]. The specimen has a chevron notch and side grooves in the slit.…”
