A New Model of Energy Valorization for Olive Grove By-Products Based on the Gasification Technology Integrated in an Olive-Oil Mill

Olive pomace is a widely available agro-industrial waste residue in Europe that has the potential to contribute towards a circular, low carbon bio-economy. This study demonstrated, for the first time, the ability to successfully pyrolyse olive pomace with microwaves for the production of bio-char and bio-oil. It was found that the energy requirement needed to pyrolyse up to 80 % of the olive pomace was as low as 3.6 kJ/g and bio-oil yields up to 30 % were produced. Microwave power did not influence the overall yields or the chemical composition of the obtained bio-oils, but did alter the textural properties of the generated bio-chars and their ability to remove methylene blue dye. Optimum processing conditions were found to be within the 3.6 kJ/g energy requirement with a microwave power of 200 W and processing time of 180 sec. These conditions produced a bio-oil fraction containing mainly acetic acid (71.9 %) and a bio-char with a surface area of 392.3 m 2 /g, micropore volume of 0.15 cm 3 /g and a methylene blue removal efficiency of 40 qMB mg/g. The results acquired from this study reveal the superiority of microwave heating in a pyrolysis system and highlight a novel and prospective route for added value recovery from natural waste resources like olive pomace.

This paper presents the energetic and economic analysis of a virtuous example consisting of a tri-generation system fuelled only with olive tree pruning residues and planned to be located next to Bari Airport (Apulia, Italy). The main goal is to demonstrate the feasibility and convenience of producing cooling, heating and electrical power from olive tree pruning residues in those regions characterized by a high availability of this kind of biomass, such as Apulia. A strategic location was selected, namely Bari Airport (Apulia), and this paper demonstrates the economic convenience of installing a commercially available Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) unit of 280 kWe that is capable of satisfying the thermal demands of the airport, with the addition of an absorption chiller for air conditioning in the airport buildings. First it is verified that the quantity of oil tree pruning residues available in the area surrounding the airport fully can satisfy the plant demand of feedstock. Then a detailed description of the components of the plant is provided. The performance of the plant is therefore evaluated in order to assess the thermodynamic competitiveness of a tri-generative system fuelled with this type of biomass. Finally, a detailed economic analysis is carried out with the aim of demonstrating the advantages that the plant can assure in terms of payback period (PBP), net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). Two different typologies of government incentives are considered. In both of which, the PBP is 6 years with an IRR of about 21% and this points out the great economic attractiveness of the project. Olive crop and olive oil industry generates several residues, i.e., olive tree pruning biomass (OTPB), extracted olive pomace (EOP) and olive leaves (OL) that could be used to produce high-added value products in an integrated biorefinery. OTPB is generated in the field as a result of pruning operation to remove old branches; EOP is the main residue of the pomace olive oil extracting industry after extraction with hexane of residual oil contained in olive pomace; and OL comes from the olive cleaning process carried out at olive mills, where small branches and leaves are separated by density. In this work, an analysis of the potential of OTPB, EOP and OL residues was addressed by estimating the production volumes at national level and the spatial distribution of these residues using geographic information system software. Information provided by public institutions and personal surveys to the industries was evaluated. Moreover, chemical analysis of the residues was undertaken and the results used to make a first assessment of valorization into biofuels such as bioethanol and bio based chemicals. Results show that close to 4.2 million tons/year of EOP, OL and OTPB derived from olive oil industry and olive tree cultivation in Spain could be available as a raw material for biorefineries in Spain. The analysis of the chemical characteristics indicates the relevant potential of these feedstocks for the production of bioethanol and other compounds such as phenols based on suitable processing and conversion routes, although techno-economic evaluations must be tackled to refine this approach.
