A new modular magnetorheological fluid valve for large-scale seismic applications

Abstract: This study presents a modular, large-scale, magneto-rheological (MRF) by-pass valve to be used in seismic damper retrofits for energy mitigation. The by-pass valve is designed, constructed and tested. The MR valve can be used to retrofit a commercial passive seismic damper as a semi-active device. The performance of the MRF valve was characterized by means of quasi-static characterizations. A new MR fluid is also developed for the seismic by-pass MRF damper application. This MR fluid has low off-state viscosit… Show more

“…Changing the structure of a bypass valve, the damper can be applied in di erent elds without other redesign, which signi cantly simpli es the development processes and reduces the cost of development. Usually, valves in the damper body are utilized so that the damper will be still operated in a passive mode if a bypass valve is in a state of failure [9,34,72,73]. However, an e ective length of damping channels is still limited in a miniature bypass valve.…”

“…A radial flow path of the MR valve was employed since it can generate a higher MR resistance for a given valve length as compared with that for two concentric cylinders in an annular configuration. 27 A twin-tube MR damper was designed in this project; a schematic diagram of the design is shown in Figure 1. There are two reservoirs in the MR damper: an inner reservoir and an outer reservoir.…”

“…The fundamental principle of the MR damper is similar to that of the conventional passive damper, which dissipates kinetic energy as heat through the flow restriction mechanism. The restriction of the fluid flow generates a reaction force perceived as a damping force [7,[22][23][24][25]. In the conventional passive damper, the flow restriction is caused by the piston orifice acting as a fixed valve.…”
