A new optimal approach for coordination of overcurrent relays in interconnected power systems

Abstract: In this paper, a new method for optimum coordination of overcurrent relays is proposed. The proposed method is based on only constraints. Minimization is inherently included by setting the time dials to minimum and increasing their values gradually. Configuration changes of the network is taken into account. The method does not need any initial solution. It can consider both linear and nonlinear relay characteristics models. The optimal settings of overcurrent relays for 8-Bus and England Norweb networks are o… Show more

“…Linear programming approach based on interval analysis concept was also used for solving the directional over current relays (DOCRs) coordination problems. These techniques also considers the effect of network uncertainty in defining the relay coordination problem [32,33]. In [34][35][36], linear programming methods were discussed in which constraints relaxation was also considered for optimal coordination of over current relays for interconnected power networks.…”

“…The pickup current limits are chosen so that the lower limit is equal to maximum load current after being multiplied by 1.3, and the upper limit is equal to the minimum fault current at the far end of the faulted bus [18].…”

“…In power transmission systems, these relays are considered a reliable and low cost alternative compared with distance or pilot relays [1,2]. Moreover, DOCRs are used for the protection of meshed distribution systems with possible integration of distributed generation (DG) units [3][4][5][6][7][8]. One of the main challenges while designing protection schemes is to ensure accurate coordination of all relays in a power system [9].…”

“…Recently, in the literature, optimisation techniques have been commonly used to solve the protection coordination problem of interconnected systems [3][4][5][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. In such studies, the DOCRs tripping times are governed by an inverse time-current characteristic.…”
