A new phenomenon in interference effect on catamaran dynamic response

Abstract: Interference effect between catamaran demi-hulls has been considered as an adverse fluid-solid interaction; the narrower separation distance between the two hulls, the greater drag force acts upon the catamaran. However, this study is aimed at introducing a novel phenomenon contrasting outcome in semi-planing and planing regimes. As speed and accordingly the Froude number increase the catamaran transits across different modes, free surface profile becomes complicated and so does the interference effect as well… Show more

“…The functionality of the ST40M engine was tested for the entire operating domain by using the same fuel system, lubrication installations, control systems, and instrumentation designed for operation on the ship. A short description of the process can be found in [25], where the results obtained for the intake manifold are presented.…”

“…Lately, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has imposed itself as a very valuable tool for many numerical studies related to the investigation of the total resistance of a catamaran and the interference phenomenon. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] The combination of experimental and computational fluid dynamics currently represents the best practice for the investigation of catamaran hydrodynamics. 21 The influence of a bulbous bow on the total resistance of a yacht was investigated using both towing tank tests and numerical simulations.…”

“…In recent years, multi-hulls have been widely studied by a large number of researchers because of their wide deck area, excellent speed, and seakeeping performance. The catamaran is one of the most widely studied and applied hull forms, with relatively variable designs, including the small waterline catamaran (SWATH), wave-piercing catamaran, partial air cushion support catamaran (PACSCAT) [1][2], asymmetric catamaran [3][4][5], supercritical catamaran [6], etc. Trimarans and pentamarans mostly use the form of a large main hull in the middle and small demihulls distributed on both sides of the main hull, while the hull forms are mostly slender or small waterline hulls.…”
