A new pre-crash system for side impact protection

Abstract: Sub-project 6 of the European Integrated Project APROSYS, implemented within the 6th Framework Programme, has developed an integrated safety system for side impact protection. For this, two different innovative technologies have been applied for the first time as a technology showcase in a car: shape memory alloy based actuators and a pre-crash sensing subsystem using radar and stereo-vision observing the side of a vehicle. Several technical challenges had to be met during development work. The sensing subsyst… Show more

“…The video-based object tracking framework which is taken as a basis for this work has been built at Fraunhofer IITB in the course of the EU funded project APROSYS [17]. The goal was detection of imminent side collisions to enable timely activation of novel occupant protection systems [18]. The sensor system under consideration here is a side-looking stereo video camera [19].…”

“…In order to determine the kinetic law, Abeyaratne and Knowles [12,13] have determined the driving force and the propagation speed of the phase boundary. Some experimental work related to damage behavior of shape memory alloy composites can be found in [14], and people are trying to integrate SMA-based devices in pre-crash systems or absorbing devices [15,16]. The first approach is clearly fully experimental and the design is based on very simple considerations of the behavior of the SMA device.…”
