“…The majority of included studies were conducted in Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan; 30 in total). Among the remaining 18 studies: ten were undertaken in Europe (France, Italy, Macedonia, Sweden, Germany, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Spain and Turkey) [ 20 , 22 , 26 , 27 , 30 , 34 , 42 , 46 , 57 , 60 ], three in the United States [ 18 , 21 , 36 ], one in Australia and New Zealand [ 39 ], one in South Africa [ 17 ], and two included more than one geographical region [ 29 , 41 ].…”

“…23 out of the 48 included studies reported a higher cardiovascular mortality rate in men than women, with risk estimates ranging from 1.16 to 3.51 (Tables 2 and 3 ) [ 18 20 , 25 , 30 , 35 , 37 , 38 , 42 , 45 , 55 , 57 , 58 , 60 62 ]. However, 18 of the 48 studies showed that men had a lower risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to women, with risk estimates ranging from 0.29 to 0.93 (Tables 2 and 3 ) [ 23 , 24 , 34 , 39 , 44 , 46 , 47 , 49 , 53 , 54 , 59 ].…”

“…In addition, anti-tenascin-C antibodies coupled to radioisotopes might be useful to image tissues and tumors of high tenascin-C gene expression (reviewed in Gu et al, 2015;Jacobson et al, 2015;Orend et al, 2014;Spenle et al, 2015b). Detection of high protein levels of tenascin-C within pathological tissues as well body fluids could be of diagnostic value and might provide a means to earlier detect associated conditions, including heart disease, fibrosis, pre-eclempsia, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and cancer (Orak et al, 2016;Orend et al, 2014;Schwenzer et al, 2015;Ulusoy et al, 2015, Franz et al, 2015, Imanaka-Yoshida, 2012. Finally, the high levels of tenascin-C found in breast milk of HIV-infected mothers can potentially be exploited in a HIVprevention strategy 'designed by nature' as their breast-fed infants are protected from contracting HIV (Fouda et al, 2013).…”

“…In our study, higher TN-C concentrations were not associated with diabetic nephropathy. In high-risk haemodialysed patients (38% with type 2 diabetes), serum TN-C concentrations were found to predict all-cause-and CV-mortality [28]. In the latter study, high TN-C concentrations were associated with high blood glucose concentrations, and the authors attributed this relationship to the microvascular complications related to increased expression of TN-C (among other ECM components) that has been reported in the retina of individuals with diabetes [26].…”

“…Recently, a big-data approach in >8400 individuals with dysglycaemia identified TN-C, among other biomarkers, as an independent determinant of CV outcomes or death [11,12]. In individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD;~40% with type 2 diabetes), higher serum TN-C levels were significantly associated with CV-associated morbidity and/or death [27,28]. The association between TN-C and CV events in a population of purely diabetic individuals remains to be demonstrated.…”
