A new priority based congestion control protocol for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Abstract: New applications made possible by the rapid improvements and miniaturization in hardware has motivated recent developments in Wireless MultimediaSensor Networks (WMSNs). As multimedia applications produce high volumes of data which require high transmission rates, multimedia traffic is usually high speed. This may cause congestion in the sensor nodes, leading to impairments in the quality of service (QoS) of multimedia applications. Thus, to meet the QoS requirements of multimedia applications, a reliable and … Show more

“…Another priority-based congestion control protocol was proposed in [45]. In this protocol, traffic is divided into four (4) traffic classes: real-time traffic (EF class), high priority non real-time traffic (NRT1 class), medium priority non real-time traffic (NRT2 class) and low priority non real-time traffic (NRT3 class).…”

“…Motivated by the limitations of the existing protocols such as PCCP [39], CCF [40] and PBRC-SD [45], a priority-based rate routing protocol for WMSNs will be proposed in this research. The proposed protocol is aimed at improving PBRC-SD and has thus borrowed some features from it.…”

“…These protocols are different in terms of congestion detection, congestion notification, and rate adjustment mechanisms ( Table 1). Congestion detection methods that are employed in Wireless Sensor Networks may use queue length [8][9][10][11][12], packet service time [13], the ratio between service time and packets inter-arrival time [14], Packet service ratio [15] or dual buffer thresholds and weighted buffer difference [16]. For sensor networks using MAC layer protocols such as CSMA, channel load can also be used as a tool for congestion detection [8].…”
