A new root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. (Nematoda: Meloidogynidae), parasitizing Robusta coffee from Western Highlands, Vietnam

Abstract: A new root-knot nematode, parasitizing Robusta coffee in Dak Lak Province, Western Highlands of Vietnam, is described as Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. Morphological and molecular analyses demonstrated that this species differs clearly from other previously described root-knot nematodes. Morphologically, the new species is characterized by a swollen body of females with a small posterior protuberance that elongated from ovoid to saccate; perineal patterns with smooth striae, continuous and low dorsal arch; lateral … Show more

“…Later on, Nguyen and Nguyen (2000) provided the first full checklist of PPNs in Vietnam, which included detailed morphological characterizations of 160 species. Since the initial release of this list, numerous new species descriptions and new genus records in Vietnam have been published, including new species of the genera Apratylenchus (Trinh, Waeyenberge, et al, 2009), Geocenamus (Le et al, 2019), Hoplolaimus (Nguyen et al, 2015), Meloidogyne (Le et al, 2019; Trinh et al, 2018), Pratylenchus (Nguyen, Le, et al, 2017) and Radopholus (Nguyen et al, 2003; Trinh et al, 2004; Trinh, Waeyenberge, et al, 2012). Furthermore, the classification of many taxa has also been revised (Chitambar & Subbotin, 2014; Decraemer & Hunt, 2013; Geraert, 2010, 2013; Ghaderi et al, 2016; Subbotin et al, 2021).…”

“…Root-knot nematodes ( Meloidogyne spp.) are included among the most dangerous crop pests due to the severe yield losses caused to a wide range of worldwide crops ( Moens et al, 2009 ; Le et al, 2019 ). The severe restrictions to the use of synthetic nematicides, imposed by their negative environmental effects, have given a strong impulse to the research on more sustainable alternative control strategies ( Tilman et al, 2002 ).…”

“…and the lesion nematode Pratylenchus spp. (Chapman 2014;Le et al, 2019;Trinh et al, 2009;Villain et al 2018;Wirryadiaputra & Tran, 2008), which are one of the most aggressive and harmful plant-parasitic nematodes attacking coffee plantations (Bell et al, 2018;Bertrand et al 2000). The leaves of trees infected with nematodes become yellow, and show symptoms of rot root or galling.…”
