A new rotary blood pump for versatile extracorporeal circulation: the DeltaStream™

Abstract: Today, rotary pumps are routinely used for extracorporeal circulation in different clinical settings and applications. A review of these applications and specific limitations in extracorporeal perfusion was performed and served as a basis for the development of the DeltaStream. The DeltaStreams is a miniaturized rotary blood pump of a new and unique design with an integrated drive unit. Despite its small design, the pump maintains a sufficient hydraulic capacity, which makes the DeltaStream very flexible for i… Show more

“…As shown in the present analysis, the Medos system required a higher pump speed to produce the same blood flow rates and generation of higher BFR of the Hilite7000LT PMP oxygenator. Although both components of the ECMO circuit have been associated with the generation of technical-induced hemolysis (10,14,15), neither under laboratory (11) nor under clinical conditions (present data) did the specific usage of the Medos system cause hemolysis. The specific usage of frHb levels to identify technicalinduced hemolysis required freedom from preexisting patient-induced hemolysis.…”

“…The hemocompatible properties of rotary blood pumps commonly used in MCS are not well described within the current literature. Most investigations regarding different pump technologies focus on hydrodynamic properties and hemolysis . Although there are some theoretical reflections on different distribution of shear stress within individual axial and centrifugal pump technologies, there is no evidence of an advantage of one pump principle over the other .…”

“…PRECiSe is designed to meet most of these demands in an optimized circulation setup. The DeltaStream was chosen as a mixed flow pump (13) combining the benefits of centrifugal and axial pumps. It has an extremely low priming volume of 30 ml and is flexible in its use because the drive unit is part of the pump.…”

“…Flow can be maintained in a range of 0-8 L/min with a rotational speed of 100-10,000 rpm. Animal experiments have shown excellent hemodynamic properties with low hemolysis and virtually no thrombogenity (14), mainly caused by washout effects between the impeller and the drive unit (13) arising from the unique design of the impeller.…”
