A new route to sol-gel crystalline wollastonite bioceramic

Abstract: Artificial bone graft materials formed from wollastonite have been extensively used in bone repair because of their high degree of bioactivity and biocompatibility, thereby justifying the development of a protocol for large-scale production. This work reports a novel route for preparing wollastonite via the sol-gel process using bentonite clay as a cheap silica source. The obtained wollastonite was characterized for morphology, elemental composition, phase composition and bioactivity using scanning electron mi… Show more

“…Other peaks at 26.8°, 29.92°, 39.3°, 44.7°, and various small peaks were also observed, more clearly in Figure 3(b), indicating the presence of reasonable amounts of CaSiO3. This was compared to previous XRD results on calcium silicates synthesized using pure silica and pure CaO precursors [29], and referred to JCPDS #00-043-1460 [30,23]. It was found that higher amounts of CaSiO3 were obtained in the present study, most likely due to the fact that our method preserves the high content of silica precursor in OPL.…”

“…Also the peaks attributing O-H group is expected due to the presence of moisture. 18,25 The crystalline phases in Figure 1(c) has shown phases corresponding to Wollastonite groups (Wollastonite triclinic and monoclinic phases) and hydroxyapatite group as per FT-IR spectra. 26 The hydrodynamic diameter of Ws and Zn-Ws was found at 620 nm and 730 nm respectively (Figure 2(a)).…”

“…Most recently, wollastonite has become suitable for reinforcing composites [7,8] and as a bone substitute in orthopedic applications owing to its bioactive properties [9,10]. Different methods are currently known for the production of synthetic wollastonite from various sources of calcium and silicon, e.g., synthesis via solidstate reaction [11,12], sol-gel method [13,14], hydrothermal synthesis [15], chemical precipitation [16,17], among others. Most of the wollastonite applications involve the use of bulk bodies or free-particles that exhibit as large specific surface area as possible without detriment of the mechanical stability.…”
