A new simple evaluation method of the monosyllable /sa/ using a psychoacoustic system in maxillectomy patients

Abstract: We found that the psychoacoustic parameters typically adopted in industrial research could also be applied to evaluate the psychoacoustics of the monosyllable /sa/ utterance, and distinguished the monosyllable /sa/ in maxillectomy patients with an obturator from that without an obturator using the system.

“…Because speech is a major determining factor, it must be accurately evaluated to achieve proper rehabilitation, which in turn helps patients to reintegrate into society. Previous studies have evaluated speech in patients after maxillectomy; a few have used speech intelligibility evaluation tests, while many others have used digital processing methods that do not depend on perceptual determinants . Digital speech analysis aids in the reproducible evaluation of objective wave patterns and allows easier data processing.…”

“…In fact, VOT measurements can reveal the mechanism of consonant unnaturalness in maxillectomy patients. With further research, changes in VOT might explain the difference in psychoacoustic features between maxillectomy speech and normal speech [5]. …”

“…Sumita et al [4] evaluated the speech of maxillectomy patients using vowel formant analysis, while Prunkngarmpun et al [3] used a nasometer. Chowdhury et al [5] introduced psychoacoustic evaluation of the syllable /sa/ with these patients. However, it is difficult to conduct detailed assessments of other consonant articulations.…”

“…Accurate evaluation of speech ability is important for proper speech rehabilitation, which helps to reintegrate maxillectomy patients into society. Many studies have been performed to establish a speech evaluation method for maxillectomy patients . Some researchers have used speech intelligibility tests to evaluate patients' speech ability , whereas others have used digital processing methods that do not depend on perceptual determinants .…”
