A new species and two new records of Quercus (Fagaceae) from northern Vietnam

Abstract: A new species, Quercus xuanlienensis Binh, Ngoc & Bon, is described from Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Vietnam. The new species is morphologically similar to Q. edithiae Skan, in having 8–11 pairs of secondary veins, bowl-shaped cupules and ellipsoid to cylindrical-ellipsoid and basally convex nuts. It differs in having serrulate leaf margins only at apical 1/5–1/7, almost entire margins of bracts on cupule and much longer nuts. The species is also similar to Q. fleuryi Hickel & A. Camus in having leaves glabrous … Show more

“…Comparing with case studies reported in the original MIGseq publication, our sampling included a mix of herbarium and silica-dried samples and resulted in a roughly similar number of loci [54]. Using STACKS, an approach more adapted to population-level inquiries [56], Fagaceae-focused studies retrieved many more loci [57][58]. However, here we opted for a conservative approach in this complex group, to avoid inclusion of paralogs in our dataset.…”

“…Critically Endangered (CR). From our intensive field survey in Bidoup-Nui Ba Naitonal Park and its vicinities from 2015 to present (Tagane et al 2017& 2020, Binh et al 2018b, Lithocarpus bidoupensis was found only in a narrow area within the protected areas of Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, and its adjascent area of Son Thai Commune at the elevation range between 1400 and 1669 m. In the area, 0.6-1.1 cm high, 1.2-1.5 cm in diam., glabrous, reddish brown to grayish brown in sicco, tomentose with soft white hairs near apex; basal scar slightly concave, 1.2-1.4 cm in diam.…”

“…Historically, Quercus was divided into two subgenera: Quercus (scale-cup oaks) and Cyclobalanopsis (Oersted) Schneider (cycle-cup oaks). Some elevate Cyclobalanopsis to generic status (e.g., Hsu et al, 1985;Huang et al, 1999), but most taxonomists recognize it as a subgenus of Quercus (e.g., Nixon, 1993;Manos et al, 2001;Oh and Manos, 2008;Deng et al, 2013bDeng et al, , 2017Binh et al, 2018aBinh et al, , 2018b.…”
