The external morphology is relevant for taxonomy and is the first character to identify the sponge. A morphological description commonly includes the color, thickness, size, hardness, if encrusting on the substrate, if with projections, and the quantity, location, size, and shape of the osculum. The surface is also relevant for first identification, and the translucence, before and after fixation; the texture of the surface; and if it is uneven, reticulate, loosely connected to the choanosome, and easily detachable are considered.
