A new species ofCenopalpusPritchard & Baker (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) from Japan, with ontogeny of chaetotaxy and a key to the world species

Abstract: A new species of flat mite, Cenopalpus umbellatus sp. nov. (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tenuipalpidae) is described and illustrated based on females, males, deutonymphs, protonymphs and larvae. The morphological ontogeny in idiosomal and leg chaetotaxy is briefly described for all stages. Mite specimens were collected from the leaves of Rhaphiolepis indica var. umbellata Makino (Rosaceae), an evergreen shrub native to Japan. An identification key to the world species of Cenopalpus is also provided.

“…Setae d and lʺ are added to genua I-II in the deutonymph, while seta l′ is present on genu III in the larva and added to genu IV in the protonymph. The expression of seta l′ on genu III in the larva follows a common pattern also seen in other genera such as Acaricis, Cenopalpus, Meyeraepalpus, Pentamerismus, Raoiella and some Tenuipalpus species (Beard et al 2014(Beard et al , 2018Welbourn et al 2017;Gu & Zhang 2020;Negm et al 2020); whereas the presence of setae l′ on genu IV is uncommon in the family. Other species of Tenuipalpus add seta l′ on genu III in the deutonymph.…”

“…Within the family, Cenopalpus is an important genus with 71 described species (Castro et al 2020). In the last two decades, researchers reported new records and species of this genus in several countries, including Bulgaria (Trencheva and Trenchev 2018), Georgia (Arabuli and Kvavadze 2013), Greece (Hatzinikolis et al 2001), Hungary (Ueckermann and Ripka 2016; Kontschán et al 2020), India (Mitra et al 2018, Iran (Rahmani et al 2008; Khanjani et al 2012; Ardali et al 2014, Japan (Negm et al 2020), Pakistan (Hasan et al 2004; Iqbal et al 2007, Syria (Barbar 2016; Barbar 2018; Zeity and Srinivasa 2019, Turkey (Sağlam and Cobanoğlu 2010; Cobanoğlu et al 2016; Cobanoğlu et al 2019 and the United States (Bajwa et al 2001).
