A new species ofParaglypturus(Crustacea: Decapoda: Axiidea: Callianassidae) from a vent field in the Tonga Arc of the south-western Pacific Ocean

Abstract: A new species of callianassid ghost shrimp, Paraglypturus tonganus sp. nov., is described and illustrated on the basis of five specimens that were collected from sediments in a vent field of the Tonga Arc, south-western Pacific Ocean. This new species is morphologically very similar to P. calderus Türkay & Sakai, 1995, the type species of the genus Paraglypturus Türkay & Sakai, 1995. It differs from P. calderus mainly in the absence (vs. presence in P. calderus) of an anterolateral row of setal pores o… Show more

“…The present description of P. emanata n. sp. adds to a growing list of extant and fossil axiidean decapods reportedly associated with sediments near hydrothermal vents, cold hydrocarbon seeps, mud volcanos, and similar environments (see Türkay & Sakai 1995;Peckmann et al 2002;Lin et al 2007;Dworschak & Cunha 2007;Karasawa 2011;Dworschak et al 2012;Kiel & Hansen 2015;Kim et al 2016;Ahn et al 2017;Hyžný et al 2018). Predating most of these reports was a world summary of vent and seep associated decapods by Martin & Haney (2005) that included the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Callianassa truncata Giard & Bonnier, 1890 (now Necallianassa truncata) as the only listed callianassid, along with the western Atlantic Calaxius carneyi Felder & Kensley, 2004 as the only axiid.…”

“…As well as chemoautotrophic organisms, heterotrophic fauna can be found at or in the vicinity of these sites, where they can benefit from enhanced food availability if they are able to tolerate the environmental conditions (Erickson et al, 2009). In the South Pacific Ocean, an undescribed species of Vulcanocalliax Dworschak and Cunha, 2007 and Paraglypturus tonganus Ahn, Kim, Ju and Min, 2017 (both Eucalliacidae) have been recorded at cold seep and hydrothermal vent sites, respectively (Lörz et al, 2008;Ahn et al, 2017).…”

“…7) have been sampled but not with the TV grab used to make the collections reported here. This hydraulic grab can be guided to target soft sediment, is large, can consistently take samples to sediment depths of 50 cm and has successfully recovered ghost shrimp (Ahn et al, 2017). Small grab samplers are successful in shallow water for ghost shrimps up to about 25 mm long (e.g.…”

“…This was confirmed by PCD on a paratype (SMF 22951) but subsequent examination by GCBP in 2008 and in 2018 of another specimen (MNHN Th1416) failed to distinguish the structure. Ahn et al (2017) figured in colour a yellow patch on the upper surface of the uropodal endopod of P. tonganus.…”
