A new species of Neocarus Chamberlin & Mulaik, 1942 (Opilioacarida, Opilioacaridae) from Brazil, with remarks on its postlarval development

Abstract: Neocarus proteus sp. n., is described from caves and the surrounding epigean environment of ferruginous outcrops (Cangas) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In addition, some notes about development in this species are presented. Neocarus proteus is the only species in the genus that has smooth or barbed genital setae and that carries coronidia on the basitarsi, tibiae and genua of legs II–III. Females carry additional setae with rounded tips on the subcapitulum, and are, on average, larger than males. This distinct sex… Show more

“…Within that subset of taxa, most were described from North and Central America (Chamberlin and Mulaik 1942;Juvara-Bals and Baltac 1977;Klompen 2002, 2009). Only five species (in two genera) have been described from South America, Neocarus platensis Silvestri 1905 from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil Neocarus ojastii Lehtinen 1980 from Venezuela, Neocarus potiguar Ferreira 2012, Neocarus proteus Bernardi, Klompen, Zacarias, andFerreira 2013 and Caribeacarus brasiliensis Bernardi, Silva, Zacarias, Klompen and Ferreira 2013 from Brazil (Bernardi et al 2012;Bernardi et al 2013a;Bernardi et al 2013b;Hammen 1969;Lehtinen 1980;Silvestri 1905). In this study we describe a new species of Neocarus from North of Brazil.…”

“…Most species are found in forest litter, but some have been recorded in hypogean environments, for example Caribeacarus brasiliensis Bernardi, Silva, Zacarias, , Caribeacarus vanderhammeni (Juvara-Bals & Baltac, 1977, Neocarus caipora Bernardi, Klompen & Ferreira, 2014, Neocarus coronatus Araújo & Feres, 2018, Neocarus orghidani Juvara-Bals & Baltac, 1977, Neocarus potiguar Bernardi, Zacarias & Ferreira, 2012, and Neocarus proteus . Recently, a large number of species, including a new genus, have been found and described from Brazil (Araújo et al 2018, Bernardi et al 2012, Vázquez et al 2014. In addition to these new taxa, in the present paper were describe a new species, Neocarus spelaion sp.…”
