Abstract: This study uses morphological and molecular evidence to describe a new intertidal species of Perinereis Kinberg, 1865 (Annelida: Nereididae) from northeast Algeria. Perinereis louizomarum n. sp. belongs to Subgroup 1A, which is distinguished by a single bar shaped paragnath on area VI of the proboscis and a dorsal ligule that is either slightly or not expanded in the posterior parapodia. Annelid biodiversity studies in the Red Sea are limited and integrative taxonomy is needed to accurately improve reference libraries in the region. As part of the bioblitz effort in Saudi Arabia to assess the invertebrate biodiversity in the northern Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba, Perinereis specimens from intertidal marine and lagoon-like rocky environments were selected for an independent assessment, given the known taxonomic ambiguities in this genus. This study used an integrative approach, combining molecular with morphological and geographic data. Our results demonstrate that specimens found mainly in the Gulf of Aqaba are not only morphologically different from other five similar Perinereis Group I species reported in the region, but phylogenetic analysis using available COI sequences from GenBank revealed different molecular operational taxonomic units, suggesting an undescribed species, P. kaustianasp. nov. The new species is genetically close and shares a similar paragnath pattern to the Indo-Pacific distributed P. helleri, in particular in Area III and Areas VII–VIII. Therefore, we suggest it may belong to the same species complex. However, P. kaustianasp. nov. differs from the latter mainly in the shorter length of the postero-dorsal tentacular cirri, median parapodia with much longer dorsal Tentacular cirri, posteriormost parapodia with much wider and greatly expanded dorsal ligules. Additionally, two new records are reported for the Saudi Neom area belonging to P. damietta and P. suezensis, previously described only for the Egyptian coast (Suez Canal) and are distributed sympatrically with the new species, but apparently not sympatric with each other.

In this study, we conducted morphological and molecular analyses of Perinereis wilsoni, a species being considered for aquaculture in China. We found this species difficult to identify because of its close morphological similarity to the sympatric P. mictodonta and thus sought genetic markers to more easily distinguish it and to investigate its phylogenetic relationship to P. mictodonta and other nereidids. For the first time, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome, nuclear ribosomal sequences (18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-28S), and four nuclear histone genes (H3-H2A-H2B-H4) of P. wilsoni. Comprehensive bioinformatics methods were employed to assemble the genome-skimming data of P. wilsoni to ensure assembly quality. Phylogenetic analyses based on five datasets of the available mitochondrial genomes (32 taxa in Nereididae, including 8 taxa in Perinereis), using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses, provide support for the monophyly of the genus Perinereis. In contrast, the P. nuntia species group, a subgroup within Perinereis, is nonmonophyletic. Perinereis wilsoni has a closer phylogenetic relationship with P. vancaurica and P. nuntia. Our study serves as a baseline for future work on the cultivation, reproductive biology, and phylogeny of P. wilsoni.

Two new species of Perinereis with single bar-shaped paragnaths on area VI (Group 1) from the rocky shores of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, are described with barely (Subgroup 1A) or largely (Subgroup 1B) expanded proximal region of dorsal ligule in posterior parapodia. Perinereis malabarensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from the morphologically similar 1B species P. euiini Park & Kim, 2017 by the paragnath count in area I, the laterally isolated paragnaths in area III, and the length of the dorsal cirrus and dorsal ligule. Additionally, P. misrai sp. nov. is more similar to 1A species P. falsovariegata Monro, 1933 and P. villalobosi Rioja, 1947, but differs by the paragnath count in areas III–V and VII–VIII, the isolated paragnaths in area III, and the number of rows in the anterior band of areas VII–VIII. The morphological characters of the current 44 species within Perinereis G1 are compared, and an identification key to the species belonging to this group is also provided.
