A new species of Pseudodiaptomus (Crustacea, Copepoda, Calanoida, Pseudodiaptomidae) from the Prasae River Estuary, Gulf of Thailand

Abstract: A new species of the calanoid copepod genus Pseudodiaptomus was collected from the Prasae River Estuary, Rayong Province, on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand. This species is definitely assigned to the lobus species group sensu Walter (1986a). The female of the new species differs from other congeners in the elongate genital double-somite with a blunt process ventrally and the second urosomite about 2.54 times as long as wide. The male is also easily distinguished from other congeners by the structure… Show more

“…It was found in roadside canals and tributaries that connected to the Mekong River in Ho Chi Minh City. This species was recently described from specimens collected in the Prasae river estuary, on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand [29]. In addition, Pseudodiaptomus annandelei was found in a wide range of habitats, including freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and ponds, which correspond with the previous records of this species in fresh and brackish water in the Mekong Delta region by Phan et al (2015) [21].…”

“…The samples were divided by a Folsom splitter until each aliquot contained approximately 400-500 specimens. Zooplankters were sorted and identified using the keys of Shen (1979) for freshwater species, and those of Chihara and Murano (1997); Walter et al (2006), Sakaguchi and Ueda (2010); Ueda et al (2011), Srinui et al (2013Srinui et al ( , 2019, Lian et al (2018), and Shih et al (2019) for marine species. The numbers of individuals (ind.)…”

“…The genus Pseudodiaptomus comprises today 80 species, five of which have been described in the last 10 years (e.g., Nishida & Rumengan, 2005;Sakaguchi & Ueda, 2010;Srinui et al, 2013). Most of them are distributed in the Indo-Pacific area, occupying a few restricted regions, and the majority (~60 species) occupies only one geographical area or two adjacent ones (Table 1 in the Supplementary material).…”
