A new species of shrike (Laniidae: Laniarius) from Somalia, verified by DNA sequence data from the only known individual

Abstract: A new species of bush‐shrike is described on the basis of the only known individual. The bird was captured in a disturbed Acacia thicket near the town of Bulo Burti by the Shabeelle River in central Somalia. Believed to represent a species near extinction, the bird was kept alive, studied in captivity and then released. The type material comprises moulted feathers, blood samples and DNA extracted from feather quills. For comparison, DNA from other bush‐shrikes was obtained from old museum skins and three live … Show more

“…In this study, we determined relationships within the Karoo Lark complex using sequencing of part of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene as an independent measure of evolutionary relationship. This gene has highly conserved regions which facilitate the use of published sequences of oligonucleotide primers (Kocher et al 1989, Edwards et al 1991, Avise et al 1994 and has a relatively faster rate of evolution than the mtDNA genome as a whole (Irwin et al 1991): it is therefore capable of resolving a variety of questions at the species level (Shields & Helm-Bychowski 1988, Smith et al 1991, Helbig et al 1996. Genetically defined taxa within the Karoo Lark complex were then compared using morphological and male song characters to assess the status of species present in the complex.…”

“…In lieu of an onomatophore specimen of the new parrot, the authors deposited feathers from the holotype and paratype as vouchers in following Smith et al (1991), per the recommendation of Donegan (2008) and in compliance with Article 72.5.1 of the CODE, which states that a type may be an animal or any part of an animal. Article 16.4.2 of the CODE will be met with the deposition in a secure collection of the extant, caged individuals from whom the feathers were removed upon their death.…”

“…these DNA analyses are more likely to be conclusive than are phenotypic comparisons. In fact, the DNA from a unique shrike successfully allowed the recent determination of a new species (Smith et a/. 1991).…”
