“…Twelve species have been described for the genus Chartergellus (Vespidae: Polistinae: Epiponini) of social wasps in Central and South America (West-Eberhard et al, 2010;Mateus et al, 2015;Carpenter et al, 2019). Pronotum with lateral fovea, sometimes shallow, forewing with prestigma shorter than the pterostigma, head, in dorsal view, without vertical carina, scutellum rounded in profile, mesoepisternum without dorsal sulcus and palpal formula characterize individuals of the genus Chartergellus of the tribe Epiponini (Carpenter and Marques, 2001).…”

“…However, in C. zonatus the clypeus is separated from the eyes vs clypeus touching the eyes in C. flavoscutellatus ( Fig 1C), C. afoveatus, C. amazonicus, C. atectus, C. golfitensis, C. punctatior, and C. trinitatis, although, as pointed out by Cooper (1993) and Mateus et al (2015), C. communis, and C. punctatior may have the clypeus narrowly separated from the eyes. Chartergellus afoveatus and C. jeannei also present both states (clypeus narrowly separated from the eyes, sometimes touching).…”

“…The species was deposited in the Invertebrate Collection of Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia -INPA. Terminology employed follows Richards (1978), West-Eberhard et al (2010), Grandinete et al (2015), Mateus et al (2015) and Carpenter et al (2019). The photos were taken with a digital camera Leica DMC4500 attached to a stereomicroscope Leica M205A and combined using the Leica Application Suite software V4.10.0.…”

“…Chartergellus atectus, C. amazonicus, C. golfitensis, C. afoveatus, C. punctatior Richards, 1978, andC. trinitatis have the clypeus touching the eyes, although, as pointed out by Mateus et al (2015), C. punctatior may have the clypeus narrowly separated from the eyes. Only C. zucchii, C. sanctus and C. punctatior have the clypeus convex, and, as in the remaining species of the group, C. trinitatis has the clypeus compressed.…”

“…He remarked that it is uncertain whether this species is identical with C. frontalis sensu Bequaert, but as discussed by Carpenter and van der Vecht (1991), there are no grounds for considering Bequaert to have misidentified this species. Later, four more species were described: C. afoveatus Cooper (Cooper, 1993) (Mateus et al, 2015). West-Eberhard et al (2010) also established that C. zonatus (Spinola, 1851), treated as unrecognized by Richards (1978), is a good species.…”
